Self-esteem, the confidence in one’s worth and abilities, is essential for tweens as they begin to encounter new social challenges and expectations. During these years, children develop a stronger sense of self and are increasingly influenced by feedback from peers, parents, and society.
Tweens with high self-esteem are more likely to take on challenges, make positive decisions, and maintain resilience in the face of difficulties. Conversely, low self-esteem can lead to anxiety, self-doubt, and difficulty navigating social and academic challenges.
Building self-esteem starts with providing positive reinforcement and helping tweens recognise their strengths. Encouraging them to embrace effort and growth, rather than seeking perfection, is key. Tweens must learn failure is part of growth and that their achievements or social status doesn’t determine their worth.
Providing positive role models online who have a mandate to support the well-being of younger people contributes to fostering a healthy self-image in tweens. These role models can reflect diverse abilities and experiences, helping children understand that there are many ways to be valuable and successful. Hearing and engaging with uplifting, encouraging and life-giving content will build up a child's sense of intrinsic worth.
By supporting the development of self-esteem, we help tweens become confident, self-assured individuals who are not afraid to stand up for themselves and engage with the world around them.
